Successful OfSTED Inspection, "Highams Park continues to be a good school" say school inspectors March 2017

The school inspectors that visited the school on the 22nd March 2017 have judged that Highams Park "continues to be a good school".

The letter from the lead inspector to the school detailing their findings contains the following quotes:

  • “This school continues to be good”
  • “The good standard of education is evident in the 2016 examination results”
  • “self-evaluation of the school’s work is honest and accurate”
  • “The leadership team has maintained the good quality of education in the school since the last inspection”
  • “There is a clear sense of commitment and ambition.”
  • “Staff are proud to work at the school and feel that leaders are doing the right things to ensure staff are motivated and respected.”
  • “Pupils also said that any form of racism or homophobia is not tolerated.”
  • “The school’s motto of ‘Respect, Responsibility and Resilience’ is well on the way to becoming an embedded reality”
  • “One parent commented that they were “relieved and pleased that my son has the emotional support he needs.””
  • “Students in the sixth form feel well supported and confirmed they feel that they are studying courses that meet their needs.”
  •  “The leadership team has ensured that all safeguarding arrangements are fit for purpose.”
  • “Senior leaders work effectively as a team”

The letter with the findings of the school inspection can be obtained from our Downloads page in the section called Inspection Reports or it can be found on the Ofsted website. There is also a "Parents Guide to school inspections" available on the Gov.UK website or in the Inspection reports section of our Downloads page.

 phils tie 4Commenting on the report, Phil Grundy, the school’s Principal has said;

I am pleased to finally be able to share with you the results of the Ofsted inspection that took place at the school on the 22nd March. It has been frustrating not to be able to distribute the report at an earlier stage, but a combination of the Easter break, Bank Holidays and the thorough Ofsted verification process mean that it is only now that I am permitted to share the letter with you, the staff and the students.

As you will see when you read the report (follow the link above, or access directly via the Ofsted website) it is pleasing that Ofsted concur with our own appraisal of the school, stating that “your self-evaluation of the school’s work is honest and accurate.” It is therefore pleasing, but not surprising that the report clearly concludes that Highams Park school “continues to be good.”

Can I thank the large number of you who chose to respond to the survey that the Ofsted team circulated during their visit, obviously your responses are anonymous but it is helpful that the Lead Inspector has chosen to comment upon the strength of opinion gathered from parents, staff and students alike, all have independently expressed their pride in their school. “Success through our endeavours” is indeed “well on the way to becoming and embedded reality.”

It is apparent once you have reviewed the document, but Ofsted outline their findings in a letter addressed to myself as the Principal rather than the previous report that was published. During the visit my staff team and I spent time with the Inspectors focusing upon the process by which we continue to improve the school and the findings of the Ofsted team are outlined in the “Inspection findings” section.

I am immensely proud to serve the students and staff of Highams Park in my role as Principal, and am pleased that their hard work and commitment to one another is correctly recognised within the report. Furthermore, I look forward with confidence to working with them, as well as you the parents on our journey of continual improvement.

Highams Park is indeed a “good” school, perhaps best described as a “great” school. It is a school of which the local community should be proud. It is also an ambitious school, and one where the staff, students and parents are equally committed to further improvement through our shared endeavours. Highlights from the letter will inevitably appear on our website to emphasise the many strengths identified by Ofsted, but please be assured of both my personal, and staff teams continued commitment to further and sustained improvement.

The Chair of the school’s Governing Body, Peter Rogers has added
“I would like to congratulate all of the students, staff and parents whose hard work on a day to day basis is justly recognised in the very pleasing Ofsted letter. As your Chair of Governors I will look forward to working with you all further as the school moves from strength to strength.”

We will welcome observations from parents about the inspection report. If you have any, please email them to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
