FAQ information for parents

Dear Parents

As you are aware from my earlier correspondence the return to school in September will begin with a staggered start, in order for every student to have the opportunity to complete two lateral flow tests conducted at school before commencing their lessons.

Please find here a COVID Testing Consent Form that I would ask all families to complete on behalf of each of your children, (one for each child please).  For students who were at Highams Park last year, I am aware that you have previously completed this but appreciate that your position with regard to the testing may have changed.  I would therefore ask that everyone completes this new form at their earliest convenience, and certainly by the deadline of 19th August 2021.

For new students joining the school in Year 7 or Year 12, I would ask you to complete the consent form for the first time.  Please use your child’s Tutor Group from September, i.e. current 7P1 should enter 8P1.  I also attach an additional FAQ sheet outlining details of the testing.  It will help us greatly to be able to ensure all the required consent forms are in place prior to the testing day, so we can progress through the tests as efficiently as possible.

As I type this letter at the end of the summer term, I appreciate that there is the potential for further changes in the guidance from the Government in response to the fluctuating level of infection that may well occur.  You will see from the questions that we ask to be completed for every student; we are keen to know exactly how many of you intend to participate in the mass testing at school.  These tests are the same as the ones that you have been completing at home, but the Government have explained that the accuracy of test results completed with assistance in school is significantly higher than those tests completed without supervision at home.  Hence, we as a school are duty bound to provide the opportunity for all students to participate in the tests at school.

It is perhaps helpful for me to clarify that whilst participation in these tests is voluntary, both at school and at home, no student will be denied access to school should they choose not to participate in the tests.  The intention behind the school testing, and indeed the home testing, should you prefer to take this option, is to minimise any potential disruption to every child’s education in September.  If via regular testing we can ensure that the school is virus free, so that students and staff alike can focus, without interruption on their teaching and learning that will be of obvious benefit for us all. Please continue to report your results here:

From the school’s perspective there is no need for you to continue with twice weekly testing during the summer break, but you are welcome to do so. The priority, again from the school perspective, is that the two tests are completed prior to returning to the school.  Your survey responses will help provide clarity of how you intend to support this initiative.

The school-based testing will take place in the main school hall, and students are asked to attend in their full school uniform at the following times to complete their test.  Being in uniform will help to ensure everyone has checked that they have their full uniform in place for a pristine start to the new year!   Once the test has been conducted students are asked to immediately leave the school site and make their way back home, therefor minimising contact whilst we await the test results. The school will contact any parent if a positive test is found.

Can I thank you for your assistance and cooperation in completing this test, and ensure that students arrive at the correct time.  I would also like to pay credit to our marvelous team of parent and ex-student volunteers who in the main constitute our trained and experienced testing team.  Without their help this would simply not be possible.  Please can I encourage you all to take advantage of their determination to open our school safely and to participate in these tests and to indicate your intentions on the survey.

Yours faithfully

Phil Grundy
