Successful OfSTED Inspection, "Highams Park is a good school." say school inspectors

The inspectors have classified Highams Park as a “good” school.

The school was inspected by an inspection team commissioned by OfSTED on 5th and 6th June 2013 under the new framework for school inspection published in April 2013. This has replaced the descriptions awarded to schools at the time of our last inspection in 2009 and has set more demanding standards.

The full inspection report can be obtained from our Downloads page in the section called Inspection Reports or it can be found on the Ofsted website.

The report says:

    • Students are achieving well above the national averages and do well in their GCSE examinations, especially in mathematics, modern foreign languages, science and design and technology. They are making good progress.
    • All groups of students including disabled students, those with special educational needs, those supported by extra funds (the pupil premium) and those who speak English as an additional language make good progress in their learning.
    • Teaching is good and improving. Students are taught well by dedicated teachers who are committed to supporting their learning. As a result they achieve well and leave with good examination results.
    • This is a calm and purposeful school. It is a friendly and welcoming place for staff, students and visitors. Behaviour is good. Students feel safe, are friendly, polite and helpful. Their attendance is high and exclusions are very low.
    • Leadership, including governance, is good and improving. Shared ambitions ensure that leaders have high expectations for the school.
    • The school has a clear sense of purpose. The leadership hold a passionate view that only the best is good enough for their students and this direction is strongly supported by students, staff and parents.
    • The school is clearly committed to tackling underachievement and uses the pupil premium and the Year 7 catch-up funding to target and overcome barriers to students in fulfilling their potential.
    • The sixth form is good. Students are taught well and many are now making good progress from their starting points to achieve well.
    • There are many opportunities for pupils to attend clubs and extra classes.
    • The school has good links with its local and wider communities.

sr desk blueCommenting on the report, Steve Riches, the school’s Principal has said

"I would like to thank our parents who contributed their views of the school to OfSTED and I am grateful to all in school – particularly the pupils - whose work has led to the successful outcome of the inspection and the inspectors’ official classification of the school as a good one under the new framework.

We were awarded an 'outstanding' designation under the previous framework at our last inspection in 2009. But, this year, the bar has been significantly raised by OfSTED.  At the moment, the Chief Inspector has switched his sights to the performance of the most able pupils and 6th form students. These are two issues we have been addressing as part of our determination to keep on improving the quality of teaching and learning for all pupils.  The inspectors’ report suggests similar targets and ways of achieving them which we will pursue to the utmost."

The Chair of the school’s Governors, Peter Cates has added

“The Governors have considered the inspectors’ findings along with a report from the Principal about the school’s ever continuing pursuit of high quality education for the children.

We conclude that the snapshot taken over just two days by the inspectors endorses Governors’ long standing observations that Highams Park is an excellent school.

We congratulate the staff for all their efforts and look forward to their continued success”

We will welcome observations from parents about the inspection report. If you have any, please email them to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.
