The Careers Department at Highams Park School is here to help students with the choices they will soon be making with regard to their future. Our newly appointed Student Careers Officer, Juliet Morgan, is working hard to ensure that the school is providing students with the best possible careers education, information, advice and guidance during their time at the school.
The Careers Office is open on Mondays – Thursdays inclusive during term-time from 9.00 am – 4.00 pm. Students are free to pop by during break or lunchtime to have a chat at any time as they may not know what they would like to do post-16 but this is not unusual at this age. We encourage our students to talk to their parents, friends and teachers to discuss any thoughts they may have or to visit www.icould.com and take the Buzz test on the site to explore career ideas.
The National Careers Service provides information, advice and guidance to help individuals make decisions on learning, training and work. On this site you can find out what a job involves and whether it would be right for you. The Skills Health Check is a set of quizzes and activities designed to help you explore your skills, interests and motivations.
We are working hard to meet the Gatsby Benchmarks by 2020 as set by the Department for Education in January 2018 in their statutory guidance, which can be found here. By being part of the Reed in Partnership Young Careers Pilot until early 2019 the school has been able to agree its Careers Strategy to help implement the Benchmarks. As a result we now have strong industry partnerships in place with Coca-Cola and Zurich Insurance and also link closely with other local schools to ensure that our students are given as much exposure to impartial advice and guidance as possible.
We organise trips to external Careers Fairs like Skills London on an annual basis as well as inviting colleges and businesses in to school to talk to the students in Years 7-13. All our departments are fully committed to arranging external trips to fulfil the requirement to offer experiences of the workplace and with the continued roll-out of Start, the on-line careers platform, we are combining the most comprehensive source of information with a personalised student experience and tracking capabilities to help teachers monitor student progress and engagement.
