Introduction

FinacialHelpGifThe 16 to 19 Bursary Fund was introduced in the 2011 to 2012 academic year following the government’s decision to end the Educational Maintenance Award (EMA) scheme. The 16 to 19 Bursary Fund is money the government has given schools to give to disadvantaged students. Its purpose is to provide financial support to help students overcome specific barriers to participation, so they can remain in education.

There are two types of 16 to 19 bursaries:

  • A Discretionary Bursary that institutions award to meet individual needs. For example, transport, meals, books and equipment
  • A Vulnerable Student bursary of up to £1,200 a year for young people in one of the defined vulnerable groups

BooksGifEducation institutions are responsible for managing both types of bursary.

You could get a bursary to help with education related costs if you’re aged 16 to 19 and you are studying at a school or college like Highams Park 6th form.

A bursary is money that you, or your education or training provider, can use to pay for things like:

  • clothing, books and other equipment for your course
  • transport and lunch on days you study or train

You are expected to meet reasonable conditions relating to Attendance and Progress on your courses and these conditions are shown on the application form.

The school can stop payments if you do not meet the conditions for attendance and progress as well as the requirements on how your bursary is to be used.

Highams Park students who want to apply for support from the bursary fund should first read the DFE guidance page and then contact our 6th form office to make an application.
