Dear Parent

As all of you are aware, we are already in the process of collecting consent forms from you for the upcoming flu vaccination that is due to take place on Friday, 4th November 2021.  Thank you for your ongoing cooperation with this process.

I am now also writing to you to outline the process by which you can access a COVID vaccination for your child.  As you may be aware from recent press coverage, schools are working with the NHS to make the vaccinations available for students between the ages of 12 – 15.  However, I would like to share with you a link provided by the NHS whereby you can book a COVID vaccination for your child without having to wait to have it completed at school.

Children aged 12 to 15 years can now book their COVID-19 vaccination appointment online instead of getting a vaccine at school.

Should you be unable to book at one of the NHS clinics, we are also offering the vaccination here at school.  If you would like to make use of the opportunity at school it is necessary for you to complete the separate digital consent form below.

Vaccination consent form

As a school we have worked in cooperation with Vaccination UK to plan this opportunity.

It is hoped that the COVID vaccination will take place on Tuesday, 16th November 2021, and an early completion of the consent form will assist in the smooth planning of the process.  The digital link above from vaccinations UK also provides some helpful literature to help inform your decision as to whether to provide consent for your child to have the vaccine or not.  I do not intend to summarise the information provided but it is perhaps helpful to share the following:

  • We as a school are aware that there is a spectrum of views with regard to the COVID vaccination, we will clearly respect the choice of each family as to whether or not to take up the vaccine.
  • The COVID vaccine is entirely optional, no one will be forced to take the vaccine.
  • Students will only be permitted to have the vaccination at school if parent approval for the vaccination has been provided via the link above.
  • Students who are 16 or over will not be included in the vaccination program at school.  They are able to gain the vaccination directly from the NHS vaccination centre and we would encourage them to do so at their earliest opportunity.
  • Students under the age of 12 (some of our Year 7 students) will not have the COVID vaccine made available to them either.  Like you, we await confirmation from Vaccinations UK as to how the COVID vaccination will be made available for students as they turn 12 in coming months.
  • Whilst the vaccinations are taking place at school, they are entirely delivered and monitored by trained medical staff from Vaccination UK.  Teaching and Administrative staff from the school will be on hand to support the medical professionals with the supervision and support for the students.
  • Our earlier survey suggests that we might have an uptake of between 40% - 50%, hopefully the attached information will help guide those of you who were uncertain at the time of our survey.
  • The consent forms that you complete via the link go directly to Vaccination UK, the school are only informed two days prior Tuesday, 16th November 2021 of the volume of uptake.  Only at that point will we be able to plan the exact times for each student to have their vaccination.
  • Just as with all other vaccinations, students will receive the vaccination as part of their normal school day.  Leaving their lessons for a short period of time before resuming their normal timetable once completed.

Many thanks for your ongoing support and consideration of this matter.  As we approach the COVID vaccination being made available to our students can I please encourage you to continue the process of twice weekly rapid flow testing during Half Term.  At present this remains our school and community’s best approach to keeping the virus under control.

Yours faithfully

Phil Grundy
Principal
